Here is a shortlist of common emergency lockout situations we deal with regularly.
Locked Out - Night Latches.
Locked Out Accidentally & Lost Door Keys. The most common locksmith emergency is when people go out and forget their keys. This kind of lockout is especially common with night latchs and composite doors.
Dropped Snib. Traditional and deadlocking night latches have a snib or catch button which you press to deadlock the latch, or to hold the latch back in the unlocked position. People often misuse the snib by deadlocking the latch to hold their door open, or press the snib accidentally as they go out. Should your door close while the latch is deadlocked your key won't work, and you'll be locked out.
Remove broken key in Lock. If a key breaks off in the lock it could prevent you from gaining entry to your home or property, and your lock might not be secure either. So, to gain entry or secure your property without having to replace the lock could be difficult, unless the broken key is extracted from the lock.
Faulty Night Latches. A night latch is operated by three main components, the cylinder, the night latch mechanism, and a key, So, if you are unable to unlock a night latch with the correct key, one of these parts could be faulty. This is usually due to wear and tear, or because the lock has been badly installed. Other problems can occur if someone has attempted a break-in, or if you misuse the catch.
Locked Out - UPVC Doors, Composite Doors, and Flats or Apartment Doors.
uPVC Door Latch Lockouts. People often get locked out by a uPVC door lock because they go out and leave their keys inside the house, or because there's another key on the other side of the door. Some uPVC and composite door locks are designed to deny access from outside without the use of a key, and your key usually won't work if there is another key inside the lock on the other side of the door.
Failed Multi-Point Locking Mechanism. Common indications that a multi-point lock has failed would be if the door handle spins around, if the handle turns but dosen't unlock your door, If the key turns partway and then gets stuck, the key could just spin around in the lock, or one of the locking points could fail to open.
Faulty Euro Cylinder. If your lock is faulty, you may find that the key won't turn easily, the key doesn't work at all, or the key won't come out of the lock. In the case of some anti-snap locks, the firing pin which blocks the cam from unlawful entry can malfunction, making it impossible to unlock your door with the key.
Faulty Door Handles. If the spindle that connects the inside and outside door handle is too short, it will gradually move out of one handle and into the other, until eventually one of the handles stops won't open the door. Since many locks and latches are operated by the door handle, you might not be able to open your door if this occurs. This is especially frustrating when you're locked inside a room or a property, and can't escape.
Alignment Problems. If your door has dropped out of alignment, you might not be able to open your door simply because one of the roller cams is holding it shut, you can have problems turning the key to unlock the door, and the locking mechanism could fail or jam.
Locked Out - 5 Lever Mortice Locks.
3 and 5 lever mortice locks, "often referred to as old type locks or Chubb locks" by many people are commonly installed in most wooden doors around your homes and properties, including residential homes, office complexes, apartment blocks, and work units, etc.
Keyhole Obstructions. If your key won't go into the lock, there could be an obstruction blocking the keyhole. This is very common where a family member or friend has used the wrong key, broken a key off inside the lock, or if someone has been tampering with the lock.
Lost Key's. Almost everyone loses a key from time to time, and in the case of a 3 or 5 lever mortice lock, you'll probably need to call an experienced locksmith who can open the lock without causing costly damage to your door or door frame in the process.
Faulty Mortice Locks. If you are unable to unlock a 3 or 5 lever mortice lock while using the correct key, there could be a fault with the key or the lock. Usually, the key is worn or one of the lever springs has broken, so opening the lock shouldn't be too difficult for a trained locksmith. Other faults could include the key spinning because the tail end of the main bolt has broken off, the lock case can fall apart inside the door, the curtain (Bolt Thrower) could have worn down or moved out of place, or someone may have deliberately damaged the lock.
